What
Are the Common Reasons To NOT Use Audit Software?
by
Richard B. Lanza
There
are many reasons, all not very valid, for not using audit software which
include:
-
Getting
data takes time and I need to get my audit done NOW! -
Granted, the first time to get data may take time, but it's worth
it. Through data analysis, you will be able to increase the
quality AND efficiency of the audit which normally work against one
another. For example, say it takes three days to get a data
file. This time would be made up by the three days of rote
sample selection and review that could be replaced with 100%
analysis. Further, once the data is received, additional
analytical analysis never possible with printed reports could be
enacted for improved decision making.
-
Every
audit I do is different. - That is fine but that is no reason
to not use audit software on the myriad of different audits.
Actually, due to the advanced scope of audit areas, more can be
learned of the organization.
-
It
is so difficult to get data as no one wants to give it. - Data
is becoming easier to obtain with the advancement of relational
databases and more business users clamoring for data. One
suggestion is to complete a simple duplicate payment audit using
software (which generally finds large savings). Once the savings
are in hand, using this example with business and MIS management will
"grease the wheels of data flow".
-
I
am programming myself out of a job. - On the contrary, by
learning more of the organization, you will be in demand for more
quality information for decision making. It also should help you
get promoted before putting you on the street.
-
It
is too technical to use. - Maybe five years ago, this was the
case but today such tools have wizards, improved help features, and
online training. There has never been an easier time to use
these tools.
